What to Expect When Visiting Bertha’s Beach
There are many locations to choose from when visiting the Falkland Islands on a cruise ship, so what makes Bertha’s Beach (included in our Penguin Paradise Tour) so special?
Nestled along the pristine coastline of the Falkland Islands lies Bertha's Beach, a hidden gem waiting to be discovered by adventurous travellers. If you're planning to visit this remarkable destination with Lupin Tours, here's what you can expect from your Bertha's Beach adventure:
Getting There
Your journey to Bertha's Beach begins with a scenic drive from Stanley, the capital city of the Falkland Islands. It takes around an hour (predominantly on a tarmaced road, with a short gentle spell off-road on grass and sand) to travel to Bertha’s Beach. As you venture out into the rugged landscape, our local guides are on hand to answer your questions about our unique home. They can share insights about the area's history and wildlife, setting the stage for an immersive experience.
Penguin Encounters
Bertha's Beach is renowned for its thriving gentoo penguin colony, offering a rare opportunity to observe these charming creatures in their natural habitat. Share the beach with the penguins as they waddle along the snow-white sand, and enjoy their playful antics. Our guides will ensure a respectful and informative visit. You’ll be as close as 6m from the penguins, and if you stay still they may even come right up to you!
Wildlife Diversity
Beyond the penguins, Bertha's Beach is home to a diverse array of wildlife. Keep your eyes peeled for other seabirds. We’ve known Magellanic and king penguins as well as elephant seals to occasionally visit the beach. Dolphins are often seen playing in the waves just offshore.
Scenic Beauty
The landscape surrounding Bertha's Beach is nothing short of breathtaking. From mountains in the distance to stunning white-sand beaches and expansive ocean views, the scenery at Bertha's Beach captivates visitors with its rugged beauty. Take a moment to soak in the serenity of this remote coastal paradise and capture stunning photographs of the Falkland Islands' unspoiled wilderness. Mount Pleasant Complex, the British military base is nearby and so you may get to witness the impressive typhoon fighter-jets flying.
Hidden Gem
Bertha’s Beach is somewhat of a hidden gem and is spared from hundreds of visitors in a day. Many times throughout the season we end up sharing the beach with only the penguins and no one else, creating a truly magical experience for visitors.
Global Importance
Bertha's Beach is a very special place that is recognised as a wetland area of international importance under the RAMSAR Convention, due to the diverse variety of wetland habitats and wildlife. It is one of only two in the Falklands. It is also classified as a globally Important Bird Area by Birdlife International.
What to Bring
Prepare for your Bertha's Beach excursion by packing essentials such as comfortable shoes, weather-appropriate clothing, sunscreen, and a camera to capture the unforgettable moments. The Falklands is a very sunny country and so it can be very easy to get sunburnt. The walk from the vehicle to the penguins is short and so Bertha’s Beach is a good option for those who cannot walk through the sand dunes to see the penguins at Yorke Bay.
Although you’ll be in the middle of nowhere there is a toilet facility.
Memorable Experiences
At Lupin Tours, we are dedicated to creating memorable experiences that connect travellers with the natural wonders of the Falkland Islands. A visit to Bertha's Beach promises an authentic and immersive encounter with wildlife and nature.
Time for More
Taking a tour to Bertha's Beach allows you time to explore other parts of the Falklands. During your travelling time you can enjoy the stunning scenery of huge skys, stone runs, mountains and the sea.
We’ll pass by Mare Harbour, the British navy port, where you may be lucky enough to see the famous Falklands flagged research vessel the RRS Sir David Attenborough aka Boaty McBoatface.
You’ll have time to take the short drive outside of Stanley to nearby Yorke Bay & Gypsy Cove to see Magellanic, gentoo and, usually, king penguins.
You can also take a look around Stanley, the world’s most southerly capital city, and take in the main landmarks: Christ Church Cathedral, Whalebone Arch, Liberation Monument, Battle of the Falklands Monument and Government House (official residence of the King's representative). Your guide can give you recommendations on attractions, shops, pubs and restaurants.
