What to Expect When Visiting Whale Point

There are many locations to choose from when visiting the Falkland Islands on a cruise ship, so what makes Whale Point (also known as Kelp Point) (the destination of our Wild Shores Tour) so special?

If you're seeking an unforgettable adventure that combines rugged off-roading, breathtaking wildlife encounters, and untouched natural beauty, then a visit to Whale Point is a must. This remote, pristine location on the Falkland Islands offers a truly wild experience, perfect for travelers looking to immerse themselves in nature.

The Journey to Whale Point

After meeting your guide outside the Jetty Visitor Centre you’ll head straight out of Stanley. You’ll get to enjoy chatting to your driver, a local resident, about the Falklands and what it’s like to live in such a special and remote place. The drive to Whale Point, located on Fitzroy Farm, takes you through the stunning Falklands landscape, first on tarmaced roads for 30-40 minutes followed by about an hour off-road. Along the way, you’ll see rocky hills, stoneruns, and expansive views of the open sky (with no trees to block the view), before arriving at the spectacular white sand beach Pleasant Road and pebble beach. This drive itself is an adventure, offering a glimpse into the untamed beauty of the islands.

What to Expect at Whale Point

Wildlife Encounters

Whale Point is home to an abundance of wildlife, offering a rare chance to observe some of the Falklands' most iconic species in their natural habitat. As you explore the area with your guide, you’ll encounter gentoo and Magellanic penguins, with their charming waddles along the beach. These penguins are a joy to watch, and you’ll have plenty of time to observe them up close (up to 6m).

The other highlight of Whale Point is the elephant seals. These massive creatures can be seen lounging along the shores, their enormous size and unique calls creating an unforgettable wildlife experience. Watching them bask in the sun and interact with one another is truly fascinating, offering a unique insight into the lives of these marine mammals. They’re not easily disturbed so you can be up to 6m from them.

Elephant seals are the largest seals on Earth, with males reaching up to 6 meters (20 feet) in length and weighing over 4,000 kilograms (8,800 pounds). Females are smaller, typically measuring around 3 meters (10 feet) and weighing up to 900 kilograms (2,000 pounds). These massive marine mammals are named for the male's large, inflatable nose, which resembles an elephant's trunk. Elephant seals can live up to 14 years where they dive to depths of over 1,500 meters (5,000 feet) in search of squid and fish.

Whale Point offers ideal wetland habitats that attract a variety of bird species, many in greater numbers and diversity than other areas of the Falklands. It’s a prime spot for waterfowl, including the Falkland Flightless Steamer Duck (known locally as the logger duck) and its rarer relative, the Flying Steamer Duck. These birds can often be seen alongside Chiloë Wigeon, Silver Teal, Yellow-billed Teal, and the graceful Silvery Grebe. Occasionally, visitors may also spot the Black-necked Swan, the Falklands’ largest freshwater breeding bird.

Whale Bones and Natural History

Whale Point gets its name from the whale bones scattered along the shore. These remnants of the past offer a poignant reminder of the area's natural history and the importance of conservation. The massive bones, bleached by the sun, create a striking contrast against the pristine white sand, providing a stunning photo opportunity and a tangible connection to the region's rich maritime history.

A Pristine White Sand Beach

The white sand beach at Whale Point is one of the most beautiful spots in the Falkland Islands. Its untouched beauty is a stark reminder of the power of nature, and its remote location ensures that you’ll often have the beach entirely to yourself. The views are breathtaking, with the crystal-clear waters of the South Atlantic stretching out before you.

A Journey to Remember

Whale Point is more than just a destination - it’s an experience. From the exciting off-road drive to the incredible wildlife and stunning landscapes, this trip offers a rare opportunity to connect with nature in its purest form. Whether you're a wildlife enthusiast, a nature lover, or simply looking for a unique adventure, a visit to Whale Point is sure to leave you with memories that will last a lifetime.
